Joseph Conwell was born April 9, 1883. He served as a private in the 17th Regiment, U.S. Army, Company A. He was a musician and was stationed in Cuba during the regiment’s short occupation of the island following the war.
The regiment saw some of the fiercest fighting of the war at El Caney and Santiago. His regiment, the 17th, took the highest casualties in the war of any unit.
After the war, he married Kathryn. He died on July 30, 1958, of tuberculosis.
