Enlistment Date: May 28, 1889
Unit: 5th U.S. Cavalry
Patrick J. Murphy was born in 1861 in Pennsylvania. During the war, he joined the army and was placed in the 5th Cavalry.
In 1898, the regiment was sent to Puerto Rico where it was split into four groups in July. These groups began to spread throughout the countryside in August, with Troop A experiencing most of the combat that the regiment experienced. The regiment took part in the battles at Las Marias and Hormigueros and performed so well in these battles that it earned the right to display the Maltese Cross at the top of its regimental shield. Following these battles, the war ended and the regiment remained on the island into early 1899, when it was returned to San Antonio.
Patrick J. Murphy died in 1928. He is buried in C Annex.
